Report by Dave Coleman

I doubt there will be any abuse of our players or Oleout posts after that. The game tonight was one in which we desperately needed to get back to winning ways in after the slight slip over the last week. The game had barely started when Rashford was in down the left and maybe could have done better but it was a good sign right away. Within seconds an incident happened that was a huge influence on the outcome of the game. An extremely high tackle on McTominay resulted in a deserved red card and Southampton down to 10 men. This was the encouragement the team needed to play a more expansive attacking game against a weakened opponent. Though we had opportunities it took us around 15 minutes to take the lead when Wan Bissaka came in around the back to poke the ball into the net. Now we had the opening goal the team relaxed and played some really good football. A lovely move ended with Rashford scoring a much needed goal, another nice move forced an own goal from Southampton. Then a cross from the left was headed home by Cavani it really couldnt have gone much better. Then we were awarded a penalty when Cavani was fouled with his foot on the 18 yard line but VAR changed the decision saying the contact was outside the box. Im glad the match wasnt 0-0 as l think there would have been much more complaining from the team. The second half started as the first ended with us piling forward in totally dominant fashion. But 10 minutes into the half from a free kick Southampton got the ball in the net but thankfully VAR disallowed the goal for a marginal offside. Made up for the penalty that never was for me. Still we pushed forward camped in the Southampton half. It took us another 15 minutes but we finally got a 5th when Martial looking much like his old self scored a beauty. Not long after McTominay fired a clearance straight back in the net for the 6th. 15 minutes later Martial was brought down when through on goal for a definite penalty and a rather harsh red card. As expected Fernandes scored the penalty. Luckily for Southampton there were only a few minutes left for us to play against 9 men. But we still managed to score another well taken goal from Martial and a lovely flick from James after Fernandes had played him in. So we equalled our record PL scoreline of 9-0 and we caught up quite a bit in the goal difference column. It was a great night for the team and a perfect way to bounce back from our slight setback. It was encouraging that Rashford scored to get out of his little slump and maybe even better for Martial to score 2 really well taken goals, now maybe he can get back to being the player we all know he can be. There were plus points from every player on the pitch subs included and it would be churlish to criticise anyone. But l made Wan Bissaka my MOTM he scored a goal and he was much better in an attacking role he made his usual solid defensive display and made 1 outstanding tackle. So all in all a pretty perfect night for Manchester United and everyone involved. Next match is against Everton at home in PL on Saturday night. Come on United! 🇾🇪
